Sugri Shala
Overview
BRIEF: Design artefacts and strategies that enable meaningful sharing, immersive learning experiences, and induction towards traditional crafts of Khamir for students of grades 8–12.
CONCEPT: Our concept reimagine Sugri Shala as a 12-day interactive educational program that immerses students into the crafts of Kachchh by direct interaction with artisans, materials, and peers. This module is divided into three key phases:
A Spark of Inspiration: A guided tour of Khamir introduces students to various crafts and allows them to choose one according to their interest.
Exploration and Engagement: Over five days, students work hands-on with artisans, learning traditional techniques while experimenting with form, texture, and function.
Celebration of Creativity: At the final stage, students collaborate with peers from other crafts to co-create hybrid artefacts, which are showcased and exchanged via the Sugriyo ka Bazaar - Participatory Exhibition celebrating creative learning and cultural exchange.
Driven by storytelling, material exploration, and peer collaboration, the program positions craft as a medium of education, situating the classroom not as a passive site of learning but as an active site of making, discovery, and reflection.
OUTCOME: It is an intervention that leads to a holistic learning model, bridging the gap between traditional wisdom and contemporary education. Intertwining craft-based pedagogy with experiential learning, Sugri Shala nurtures creativity, empathy, and critical thinking in students. The outcome celebrates the act of making as a process of learning, thereby turning education into a shared, sensory, and community-driven experience.
